Holiday Foods

A week from tomorrow is Thanksgiving. It is so hard to believe that the day is almost here. Last year there was an article in the paper about how most people who eat well all year long splurge when it comes to the holidays and they don't want fusion or cutting edge trendy food, all that were surveyed wanted comfort food. That would be green bean casserole, all kinds of jello salad, and celery sticks filled with pimento cheese. Dressing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, corn souffle and rolls, cornbread or biscuits.

So what holiday food or foods are your favorites? And maybe tell why. I will get us started and I will say right off the bat, I loves it all. Sweet potatoes with pecans, cinnamon and brown sugar are a must for me. We will even have some tacky jello salad. Like the mandarin orange, powered orange jello, pineapple chunks, Cool Whip and Sour Cream salad. Mmmm...that is some good eating.

My mom was the best cook ever. She made everything from scratch and didn't hold back on anything, including the cream or butter (or love!). That said, her dressing was so dang good. I can never copy it...I don't know why. It was cornbread with all the ingredients. I also have to have pecan pie. Again, hers is the best. AND, she made homemade rolls each year. And I think that is what I miss the most, the homemade bread, it smells like love.

I'm the anti-comfort food rep. My family makes something called "Watergate" salad. I don't know if they invented it, but it's just like the orange jello thing you described, but it's lime jello. Maybe to represent money. Never quite understood it. I'll just stick w/ the rolls myself. I love those little Colonial bread (maybe regional) rolls that come in a pack. Or in later years, the yeast rolls that come in a round package.
Have a great Thanksgiving!!

The yeast rolls and tons of butter!

And I have taken to roasting tons of veggies underneath the turkey (so they are flavored with the drippings), and they are marvellous: potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, butternut squash, cherry tomatoes, you name it.

And Granny's mashed potatoes and gravy. Sigh. You can't beat those. I honestly have never even attempted making them, because I am sure I can't make them as good as she can.

As you can see, I'm all about the starches. :)

ok, since this is my first voyage into monablog-land, i have to LOL about the Dyson vacuum comment on the Saturday stuff blog. I am a FREAK about how much complete nastiness and dog hair my little Animal picks up! (Many thanks to my friend Donna, who steered me away from a much more expensive Oreck. however you spell it.) Man i love that machine. sigh.

Ok. favorite holiday food has to be the classic greenbean casserole. why IS it the only time of year we make it? i MUST have it. i can even pass on all the sweets for it. oh, and a fresh, hot, buttery yeast roll. slurp.

my aunt makes the dressing and gravy every year. it's amazing - has little bits of the turkey in it. we don't know how she makes it, and she can't write it down. she just does it. then the sweet potatoes that my mom makes with the marshmallows toasted on top. drop-kick your mama good.
